MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (October 25, 2002) – Since 1921, Milligan College has drawn its athletic identity from the name of the mountain and creek that nestles the campus in the Appalachian foothills of Northeast Tennessee. Buffalo Mountain and Buffalo Creek have long-inspired the college’s buffalo mascot and team nicknames, the Buffaloes and Lady Buffs.
Milligan athletic director Ray Smith will announce at an alumni banquet tonight, Friday, Oct. 25, that the college has a new athletic logo for its 14 intercollegiate athletic teams. And alumni will be glad to hear that they are still the mighty Buffaloes.
The new logo, which features the college’s buffalo image and a collegiate letter “M”, all in the college’s traditional school colors of black and orange, has been designed to symbolize the qualities that students, faculty, staff and alumni say best describe Milligan athletics: strength, pride, quality, tradition and teamwork.
The image will serve as the official logo for Milligan’s athletic department and provide uniformity throughout the department, explained Smith.
“The campus has gone for years without a unifying athletic logo, other than the image of our buffalo,” said Smith. “Our successful and maturing athletic program deserves a professional and unified symbol that we wear to our competitions. We look forward to making this new mark a recognizable and universal image associated with Milligan athletics.”
Milligan’s 14 athletic teams will have a customized version of the logo to represent their individual sports. The only change, said Smith, “is that the logo will say Basketball or Volleyball, for example, instead of Buffaloes.”
The new athletic logo will appear on team uniforms, the athletic website, publications, and other applications officially representing Milligan athletics. Milligan apparel and other merchandise featuring the new athletic logo will be made available for purchase at the Milligan College Bookstore.
All vendors are encouraged to contact the Sports Marketing Office at Milligan for guidelines and identity standards for use of the new logo.
