Milligan College graduates first MBA class

MILLIGAN COLLEGE , TN (July 13, 2005) — It's been 18 months of statistical analysis, strategic and global marketing, organizational theory, and so much more. On Saturday, July 23, the inaugural class of Milligan's master of business administration program will complete their studies and receive their MBA degrees. Dr. Bill Greer, founding director of the MBA program, will provide the commencement address for next Saturday's ceremony.

“This is an important moment for our region and another important milestone in the long and rich history of Milligan College ,” said Dr. Donald Jeanes, Milligan College president. “It is a milestone reached through the support and encouragement of many friends and community members.”

The 19 m embers of the inaugural Milligan College MBA class include employees from Nuclear Fuel Services, ICG/Holliston, Holston Valley Medical Center, Eastman Credit Union, Eastman Chemical Company, Honeywell International, Mountain States Health Alliance, Pace Carbon Fuels, Carrier-United Technologies, AFG Industries, Computer Sciences Corporation, Cooper-Standard Automotive, East Tennessee State University, ETSU Physicians & Associates, the U.S. Postal Service, Novaquest and Bank of Tennessee.

“Milligan launched its MBA program in 2003 in response to a growing need nationwide for ethics-based MBA programs. The curriculum is designed to provide students with a combination of technical skill, analytical and critical thinking, as well as the ability to exercise good judgment regarding the ethical implications that are inherent in virtually every business decision,” explained Greer. 

“The emphasis throughout the program is one of wedding the practical business skills with a concern for ethics and professional responsibility and the development of leadership attributes,” said Greer, who is chair of the area of business and the Kegley Associate Professor of Economics and Business .  “We are extremely proud of this first class of students, who have risen to every challenge and exhibited the personal motivation and leadership traits that will ensure their future success,” Greer added.

Greer holds a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and an M.B.A. from East Tennessee State University . He serves as president of the board of directors of the Johnson City Federal Credit Union and chief learning officer for Sysdine Technologies in Johnson City . Earlier this summer he served as a member of the faculty of the International Business Institute, teaching comparative economic systems in various cities throughout Europe and Russia .

Greer previously served as vice president of marketing for Silver Creek Technologies, and held various positions in accounting and finance with Land-O-Sun Dairies (Pet Dairy) and Morrill Motors.   He is a member of the American Economic Association, the Association of Christian Economists and the Christian Business Faculty Association.  He frequently contributes to the Business Journal of the Tri-Cities.

Milligan College 's summer commencement will be held on Saturday, July 23, at 10 a.m. and is open to the public. The 68 graduates also include one bachelor of arts (B.A.) degree, 11 bachelor of science (B.S.) degrees, and 37 master of education (M.Ed.) degrees.

An alumni reception for family and friends of the graduates will be held in the George Walker Auditorium in Lower Seeger immediately following the ceremony. The reception is sponsored by the Milligan College Alumni Office.
