Physical Plant Director retires after 18 years of service

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN ( October 26, 2004 ) — Leonard Beattie, director of the Physical Plant at Milligan College, retired Friday, Oct. 15, after 18 years of service to the college.

Over the last two decades, Beattie has overseen the general maintenance of the buildings and property of the college, including repairs and renovations. He has also helped contract and build several new campus buildings.

“There have been some really big changes over the last 18 years,” said Beattie.

When Beattie first arrived on campus, there were two houses where the McMahan Student Center was built; a preschool stood where Williams Residence Hall now stands; and Pardee Residence Hall was still standing.

Beattie oversaw the remodeling of the Steve Lacy Fieldhouse, including the roof construction and swimming pool remodeling, and the construction of the McMahan Student Center and three residence halls, Williams Hall, Kegley Hall and Quillen Hall. Beattie has also assisted in the remodeling of Hardin Hall, the Science Building , the Baker Faculty Office Center , Derthick Hall and McCown Cottage.

“The Physical Plant has served as the college's contractor and builder on a number of these building projects,” said Beattie.

Beattie said that though he is looking forward to retirement, he will miss “working with the people at Milligan and helping solve their problems.” He plans to spend time with his wife, Marlene, and his grandchildren, but he will remain busy. He has already made plans for mission and volunteer work.
