P.H. Welshimer Memorial Library Handbook

LIBRARY MISSION
Named after the Restoration Movement leader and minister from Ohio, P. H. Welshimer Memorial Library has served the Milligan College community for nearly fifty years. The three-story building was first occupied in November 1961, the gift of the T. W. Phillips, Jr. Charitable Trust and the Phillips family of Butler, Pennsylvania, after an initial gift by the Kresge Foundation of Detroit, Michigan. In addition to books, periodicals, documents, and non-print media, the Library provides access to bibliographic and full-text journal, e-reference, and e-book literature through numerous online databases and electronic resources.

The P.H. Welshimer Memorial Library exists to support the educational program of the College by providing knowledge and information resources, and spaces for study and learning. The mission is achieved through the following activities:

* Acquiring knowledge resources.
* Organizing resources for successful and efficient access.
* Providing access to other libraries and information resources worldwide.
* Assisting users in finding the knowledge and information resources they seek.
* Teaching knowledge and information research skills.
* Providing a setting that fosters study and research.
*
Preserving materials for future use.
* Providing special collections focusing on the history of Milligan College and its religious tradition.

THE LIBRARY . . .
Welcome to the Milligan Library! Here you will find a wide variety of materials to support your academic work, and some leisure time reading materials as well. The ability to research, locate, and utilize information is an important life-long skill. Becoming familiar with your college library (its people, resources, and spaces) will enhance your college experience.

. . . AND YOU
This is your College and your Library. Please respect the resources and materials that have been collected and organized at great expense and effort for you and future students.

The Library is an academic facility. Certain standards of conduct and use are necessary for the benefit and comfort of all users:

* The Library provides a variety of individual, and group study and social spaces. Patrons should respect others in quiet study areas.

* Patrons shall display a proper attitude toward property--viewing care of the Library as a matter of stewardship--refraining from abusing or moving furniture, and from acts of vandalism.

* Patrons may bring snacks and drinks into the Library. However, patrons shall help keep the building clean by disposing of all trash properly.

* Under no circumstances are Library materials to be removed from the building without being properly checked out. To do so is to abuse library privileges, to infringe on the needs of others, and to violate the standards of conduct of Milligan College.

IF THE MATERIALS SECURITY SYSTEM ALARMS AS YOU LEAVE THE LIBRARY, YOU WILL BE ASKED TO SHOW CONTENTS OF YOUR BAG OR BRIEFCASE TO THE CIRCULATION COUNTER WORKER. THE ALARM USUALLY INDICATES THAT YOU HAVE FORGOTTEN TO CHECK OUT A LIBRARY ITEM, OR HAVE A BOOK FROM ANOTHER LIBRARY. Menu

READER SERVICES
CIRCULATION (Check It Out!)
Milligan students, local alumni, and community borrowers are encouraged to checkout Lending books from the Second and Ground floors. Bring books and non-print materials to the Circulation Counter at the Library entrance and present your Milligan College ID card.

Reference books, periodicals, and some videotapes do not routinely circulate outside the Library. For demonstration use in a classroom, see a Library staff member for a Special Loan.

RENEWING BOOKS
Books may be renewed for an additional 30-day lending period if not placed on HOLD for someone else. Renewed books are subject to recall if needed by another student. Bring books in or call with the books in hand to identify them to Library staff. Phone 461-8703. You can also click on the "View your patron record" link in the online catalog to see currently checked-out items or to renew items.

RESERVE MATERIALS
Ask for Course Reserves at the Circulation Counter by professor name. Most Reserve materials are for Library use only. Overnight check-out may be available on some items and are due back during the first hour the Library is open the next day.

RETURNING LIBRARY MATERIALS
Please return all Library materials to the Circulation Counter when the Library is open. When the Library is closed, use the Return Slot on the front porch.

PLACING A HOLD ON CHECKED-OUT BOOKS

OVERDUE BOOKS
Items should be returned to the Library before they become overdue. The due date is included on the receipt you received when the items were initially checked out. You are responsible for the timely return of all books checked out.

Overdue notices are sent out as a courtesy once materials are overdue. Milligan students, faculty, and staff are not charged fines. For local alumni and community borrowers, there is a charge of $0.25 per day for each overdue item, with a maximum of $5.00 per item. The checkout system will automatically block you from further checkouts when you have items seriously overdue.

LOCATING MATERIALS
ONLINE CATALOG
Milligan College participates in the shared online catalog of the Appalachian College Association Bowen Central Library of Appalachia. Currently, 27 colleges among the roughly 36 member institutions in the ACA include their library holdings in this shared catalog. The catalog is defaulted to search only the holdings of Milligan College Library. However, you can search the holdings of any or all of the participating libraries by using the location drop-down menu.

Catalog terminals in the Library are located near the Circulation Counter, on the Second floor near the stairway, and on the Ground floor near the restrooms. The catalog is also accessible anywhere on- or off-campus from the link on the Milligan College Library website.

BOOK CLASSIFICATION
The call number listed on a catalog record and printed on the spine of a book (or non-print media cases such as CDs and DVDs) is the key to locating the book in the Library. It determines the shelf arrangement of books, grouping those together that deal with similar subject matter.

The Milligan College Library uses the Library of Congress (LC) Classification. An outline of this classification scheme is posted on the Library of Congress website. Books are arranged on the shelf alphabetically by the first letter, then by the second letter. When the letters are the same on two or more books, arrangement is then numeric according to the next line of the call number. This pattern continues through additional lines.

Examples:

D
412
.L6
D
412.2
.L6
DA
28
.D2
DA
124
.C7
DC

.C32

Numbers to the right of a decimal point in a call number are arranged in decimal order, as demonstrated by the last two examples above (.32 comes before .4).
