Area of Social Learning

Info Sheet

Human relationships are the focus of the social learning area at Milligan. History majors examine human relationships across time and within regional, national, and international boundaries. Psychology majors examine human relationships that focus on self and those that focus on others. Sociology majors examine the relationships within and among groups of the world, and public leadership and service majors examine these relationships from an interdisciplinary approach.

The history major is rooted in the conviction that knowledge of the past contributes to intellectual maturity and an enriched quality of life. In an age skeptical of tradition and infatuated with the contemporary, the study of history helps to broaden the student's world, leading to a richer understanding of the human condition in its various cultural, economic, and social contexts.

The psychology program provides an appreciation of the behaviors, intellectual functioning, development, emotions, and learning of oneself and others, all within a Christian context. The public leadership and service major prepares students to be Christian leaders for both private and public arenas, but especially in public service areas such as non-profit organizations and governmental service.

A sociology graduate's calling may be in the areas of social service and the compassionate response to human suffering and need. This major is focused toward actual service, not just theoretical knowledge about the social sciences.

Internships

To gain hands-on experience, students participate in internships at a broad range of facilities, including healthcare, service organizations, children's homes, and parachurch and mission organizations throughout the world. Undergraduate research is encouraged, and students annually participate in research projects and present papers at the Blue Ridge Undergraduate Research Conference.

Our Graduates

Milligan history majors have become teachers, lawyers, physicians, ministers, business professionals, and practicing historians. Those who major in psychology and sociology generally choose counseling, social work, or further study in these areas. Others who studied in the Social Learning Area are attorneys, business leaders, and administrators of health care facilities and agencies. Others have pursued graduate studies at institutions such as University of Tennessee, University of Kentucky, University of Louisville, Duke University, Georgia State University, Indiana University, and Purdue University.

"That's the fun part of history -- finding out something that no one knew before and contributing something new through undergraduate research."
